Addicted to Freedom

Documentary
Direction:
Flávia Lins e Silva, Eduardo Vaisman and Vinícius Reis
2002

Addicted to freedom covers the recent political history of Brazil as seen through the lens of one of the nation’s greatest criminalists: Evandro Lins e Silva. Interviewed by his granddaughter, who tries to understand her grandfather’s extremely modern mind, Evandro recalls the dictatorial years, when we was “retired” from his position at the Supreme Federal Court – which is supposed to be a lifetime post – under Institutional Act Number 5. He also remembers the impeachment of Fernando Collor, during which he represented the Brazilian people against the then President of the Republic. He also recollects the famous Doca Street case, and José Rainha Júnior, discussing the issue of the Landless Movement (MST).

Addicted to Freedom was co-produced by Canal Globosat – GNT, with support from the Jan Vrijman Fund| International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam, Holland.

The documentary has been in great demand among the students and teachers of Law faculties throughout Brazil and by professionals working in the area of Criminal Law. The film has been screened at various universities across the country, from Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro to the main capitals of the Northeast. It was also exhibited at the IDFA Festival in Holland and at the É Tudo Verdade (It’s All True) International Documentary Film Festival in 2003.
